Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity with Award-Winning Journalist Joseph Lee Online
Join us for Beyond the Pages, our virtual author series sponsored by Hilltop Bank, where stories come to life. Each month, we host engaging conversations with authors as they share insights into their works and creative journeys. From beloved classics to timely new releases, this series offers live Q&A sessions and the chance to connect with your favorite writers—all from the comfort of home.
Log on at 12:00 PM MST on Wednesday, November 5 for an enlightening conversation with Joseph Lee, Aquinnah Wampanoag journalist and author of the powerful memoir Nothing More of This Land: Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity.
In this stirring debut, Lee explores what it means to grow up Indigenous on Martha’s Vineyard—a place often seen as an idyllic summer getaway, but one that carries a deep and complex history for the Wampanoag people. Grappling with identity, belonging, and the legacies of colonialism, Lee begins with the story of his own tribe and expands to broader conversations with Indigenous leaders, artists, and scholars around the world.
Lee skillfully weaves personal narrative with global insight, offering a nuanced and thought-provoking reflection on land, culture, language, climate change, and what it truly means to be Indigenous in the 21st century.
In this conversation, you’ll explore:
- The connection between land, power, and Indigenous identity
- The impact of colonization and tourism on tribal communities
- How storytelling fosters resilience and cultural continuity
- Visions for building stronger, more inclusive communities
